• nowadays the chateau houses a Museum of Hippology documenting the evolution of the horse

Třebechovice pod Orebem

• the town lies 13 km east of Hradec Králové
• the Nativity from Třebechovice is the work of the popular artist Josef Probošt and the wood- carver Josef Kapucián; it’s 7 metres long, 3,2 metres wide and 1,8 metres high and it’s composed of 2000 carved pieces, over 50 figures imitate human movements and 120 figures move on wooden belts

Častolovice

• the town at the confluence of the Kněžná and Bělá Rivers
• the Renaissance chateau was superbly furnished, beautifully painted wooden coffer ceilings in four of its rooms have survived to these days; the gallery of Bohemian kings and the gallery of ancestors are remainders of the chateau’s oldest original painting collection

Ratibořice

• the nearby originally Baroque country chateau of Ratibořice is preserved in its late Empire appearance achieved in 1825 - 1826 by reconstruction commissioned by Duchess Kateřina Vilhelmína Zaháňská who wanted it rebuilt into a summer seat
• the valley of the river Úpa is so closely linked with the childhood of Czech writer Božena Němcová as described in one of the basic works of Czech literature – the novel „Granny“- that it became known as „Granny’s Valley“
• visitors can view an exhibition in the mill and in the timbered cottage of the Old Bleachery; the latter contains old folk furniture and conveys a general impression of the living style of the twenties and thirties of the 19th century
• 3 km from Ratibořice lies the town Česká Skalice with the Museum of B. Němcová

Náchod

• the town lies on the border with Poland on the River Metuje
• the late Renaissance chateau with the originally early Gothic 50 metres high cylindrical tower; a great collection of paintings and tapestries; a military cemetery; a French garden
• in the town-square there are: St. Lawrence church with two towers named Adam and Eve; Neo-Renaissance townhall; „Beránek“ (Lamb) - a theatre, a hotel and a restaurant built in Pseudorenaissance style
• not far from Náchod lies the Spa Běloves known for mineral spring IDA

Doudleby nad Orlicí

• the Renaissance chateau – the outer fronts and the courtyard facades of the symmetrical, one- storey building laid out in four wings are richly decorated with carpet-pattern graffiti; in the main halls these depict scenes from antique mythology executed after illustrations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses; paintings in other rooms show symbolist, compositions and religious scenes
• in the chateau there is a permanent exhibition of European and Bohemian lace and an exposition of tapestries

Dvůr Králové nad Labem

• well-known East Bohemian ZOO with safari intent on a breeding of African animals

Kuks

• the cloister and hospital with the original Baroque dispensary
• beautiful sculptures by Matyáš Bernard Braun; in two rows depict the Virtues, the Vices and angels
• in the vicinity of Kuks, situated above Žíreč, is the open-air sculptural gallery „Betlém“ (Bethlehem) with statues by M. B. Braun; they are the reliefs of St. Hubert and Birth of Christ, two mighty figures of hermits Juan Garin and Onufrius,…

Hrádek u Nechanic

• the town lies west of Hradec Králové
• this castle is the oldest and the most remarkable building of the Romantic period in Bohemia – the complex structure in „Windsor Gothic“ designed by architect G. Lamb
• the equipment of some halls was imported from originally Renaissance castles in Germany and Austria, the most notable equipment comes from Mühlgrub castle and is dated back to the year 1573
• the interiors are completed with valueable furniture and priceless works of art from the whole Europe and from various historical periods
• the castle is surrounded with a beautiful English park and golf course

Chlum

• the Monument of the Prussian-Austrian War in the year 1866; a museum; an outlook-tower; in the surroundings there are about 300 other monuments

Kunětická Hora (The Kunětická Mountain)

• rises hihg above the Elbe lowlands and highlights the castle on its top
• is a massive fortified feudal seat of the Late Gothic style and it belongs to one of the largest in Bohemia
• the castle was built by Hussite military leader Diviš Bořek of Miletínek after the year 1421

Litomyšl

• the town lies on the route from Vysoké Mýto to Moravia
• the Renaissance chateau of Litomyšl is one of the most intersting historic buildings in the East Bohemian Region and was built by the Italian master architect Giambattista Avostalis de Salla in the years 1568 - 1575
• a chateau theatre with a rich collection of stage decorations by Josef Platzer was built in the years 1796 - 1797
• in 1962, the chateau was proclaimed a national cultural monument, not only fot its architectural value but above all as an expression of respect for the Czech national composer, Bedřich Smetana, who was born there at the castle brewery on March 2nd 1824
• Litomyšl Smetana Festival is annually performed there

Nové Hrady

• the Rococo Chateau Nové Hrady near Vysoké Mýto was built in the years 1774 - 1778 when the medieval stronghold which used to tower on the hill above the small town, had been torn down

Nové Město nad Metují

• visitors are continually fascinated by the urbanistic structure of the renaissance core of the town
• the original castle was transformed into a four-wing Renaissance chateau with two large circular towers (of which only the northern one survived) and with rich chiaroscuro decoration of the facade
• the chateau was adapted in early Baroque style in mid-17th century
• chateau’s garden with baroque statues of dwarfs from M. B. Braun’s workshop

• the high Baroque chateau of Karlova Koruna in Chlumec on the Cidlina was named to commemorate the visit of Charles IV. who stayed here in autumn 1723 shortly after his coronation in Prague (Karlova Koruna = Charle’s Crown)

Kostelec nad Orlicí

• the chateau at Kostelec nad Orlicí is one of the few examples of Empire style chateau architecture in Bohemia, the chateau is surrounded by a vast English park spreading on some twenty hectares, commanding a good view of the surroundings

Potštejn

• distinctive ruins of a castle founded by Procek of Drslavice in the last quarter of the 13th century on a picturesque site in the valley of the Divoká Orlice (Wild Orlice river)

Kladruby nad Labem

• the town is worl-known for its horse-breeding farm, which belongs to one of the oldest in Europe
• local breed of carriage horses is called „Kladrubský bělouš“ (white horse)
• horse breeding in Kladruby was founded by the squires of Pernštejn already in the first half of the 16th century
• large area of horse-breeding farm includes stables and buildings, but also originally Renaissance castle and church, which were rebuilt later in the Baroque style

Bohdaneč

• the town of Bohdaneč is renowned for its peat bath, which were founded in 1897
• there is St. Mary Magdalene’s church in the centre of the square; it was built originally in the Gothic style, but then it was reconstructed in the Baroque style
• a graceful Renaissance town hall with teracotta jambs from the first half of he 16th century is situated opposite the church

Holice

• is the birthplace of famous traveller Emil Holub, his lifelong activity is commemorated in local museum of Africa
• a high tower of Baroque St. Martin‘s church from the years 1736 – 1739 is a dominanting feature of the town

Veliny

• the village Veliny is situated 4 km from Holice and there is a unique wooden church from the year 1752

Vysoké Chvojno

• the natural reserve „Buky“ with massive leafy trees
• the remarkable Baroque St. Gothard’s church, which was built in 1729, is one of the sights in the village Vysoké Chvojno
• you can also walk there through park of rare and exotic trees
